6 Ways To Tackle Blue Monday

We’ve all heard of Blue Monday – the day that falls on the third Monday of each January, every year. It is supposed to be (according to experts) the time when we are most likely to feel depressed/miserable/sad. This is probably due to the fact that we’ve spent a sh#t load at Christmas; we haven’t been paid; we have made resolutions that are beginning to take their toll; the weather is, at best, bleak and life generally sucks. Don’t fear my friends – here are 6 ways we can tackle that Blue Monday feeling and get back ahead of the game. Read on:

1.Breathe

When it all gets a bit too much to bear and we are feeling miserable or anxious, there is something that we can all do at any moment to help ourselves. Simply close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Take in long, slow and deep breaths and repeat 10 times – everything will feel that bit calmer and become easier to deal with. #breathingworks

2.Laugh

OK, I’m not suggesting some Patch Adams theory of laughter overcoming all obstacles or illnesses, but there really is something to be said for this technique. When we are faced with adversity or stress, we all have a choice either to laugh or let sadness take over. Sadness and stress doesn’t solve anything – it just makes things that much worse. Choose laughter – even when you don’t want to, especially when you don’t want to. It will train your brain to gain a better perspective, and gradually life will become a bit more peaceful.

3.Talk

Yes people, life is crap. But we are not alone in this. When life gives you a twist of lemon, talk to a friend, a colleague, a therapist, anyone. You will be surprised that even if you have someone there to listen and not necessarily advise, this will help relieve those Blue Monday symptoms.

4.Dance

I’m a great believer in dancing away your problems. You don’t even need to leave the house. Put your favourite upbeat songs on and just dance and sing for a while. If that is not your thing, do whatever is – maybe going for a run, bike ride or some meditation – it doesn’t matter – just do something to get rid of the negativity.

5.Plan

So, unless you are really fortunate, many of you (like me) will be broke right now. That said, this Blue Monday make plans for something you really want to do this year: the festival you don’t want to miss or a comedy club, or even a getaway somewhere. There’s no need to book it yet, just do some research and write down the steps you need to take to make it happen – realistic goals people, that your brain actually knows it can achieve. Then stick the plan of action on your fridge.

6.Avoid Depressants

Easier said than done, I know. But there is nothing that makes life that much crapper than when you are feeling blue and have a drink. In the same respect, take it easy on caffeine and sugar, or anything that will give you a short high followed by a massive crash. It’s never worth it.
