Today I am sharing my knowledge of LED Light Therapy – the Hollywood craze that most celebs are currently pursuing.
As a beauty editor I am totally obsessed with products and treatments that actually deliver rejuvenation, diminishing lines and wrinkles and tightening the skin wherever possible, to achieve that much sought-after youthful appearance. Sadly, they don’t all work. It is my job to filter the good from the bad and share this with the world. Light therapies are supposed to be the latest rejuvenating trend that work little miracles and can be done in minutes. The questions on everyone’s’ lips: Does it really work; is it painful, and is it better than spending our hard-earned cash on Botox and fillers? Read on:
About LED Treatments:
LED treatments are referred to as blue light, red light and yellow. Blue light is mostly used for reducing acne and acne scars, red is the go-to anti-aging treatment and yellow is often used to optimise skin health. The chosen treatment will vary from short to long wavelengths and much depends on the individual’s needs. Harvey Nichols’ Light Salon offer bespoke LED facials of which you can review here.
How Does It Work?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode of which produces therapeutic wavelengths (long and short) of light energy. Once received by the dermal cells, it is converted into ATP (an essential component for cells to produce collagen and elastin). This is proven to be extremely effective, with the skin’s response acting as it would do in your twenties. The result is a plump and rejuvenation complexion (YAAASS)!
So, if you are sick of Botox not getting all of those pesky lines and wrinkles and paying through the nose for the 3-monthly disappointment, you should definitely consider giving this a treatment a chance. Furthermore, LED is a fantastic method for dealing with unsightly pores, to even skin tone and awaken dry and dull complexions.
How Long Does An LED Light Therapy Facial Take And Is It Obvious You Have Had it?
The bonus about this little star treatment is you cannot tell you have had anything done and you can be in and out within half an hour. LED light therapy gives your skin a warm sensation, but nothing else. Phew!
Now For The Downside… (Because There Had To Be One)
It is usually advised for customers to repeat their treatment twice each week for 4-6 weeks. This works out to be a tad pricey (but in my view it’s totally worth it). Treatment prices range from anywhere between £40-£300 (depending on their needs and choice of clinic).
For those with deeper lines, have enjoyed the sun a little too much or who have smoked for some considerable time, it will take longer to achieve good results but stick with it and you will be pleased.
Once you have had the course of treatments, you may only need one or two treatments each year to maintain results.
Are There Any Contraindications?
In short, no. This is one treatment that has no contraindications and it can be used on all skin types. However, as with any treatment (and particularly if you are using an at-home device) always follow the instructions.
Should I Invest In an At-Home Device?
If going to a salon for continued treatment seems a little daunting and costly, it may be worth considering investing in an at-home device. You should know that these will undoubtedly be weaker than the professional devices, but you can achieve good results (it will just take a little longer). The other point to make is that when opting for this treatment, to guarantee success, you must endeavour to include it within your daily skincare routine. The best devices I have come across is the LightStim priced at £159.99 at Amazon and the Omnilux Clear-U, priced at £347 at Amazon.

Getting your foundation right can feel like a daunting task. To start with, there’s so many products out there and then it’s a seemingly never-ending mission to find the perfect one for your particular skin tone and type. During my years as beauty editor I have discovered some top tips that make this task as easy as putting on your shoes.
1.Define Your Skin Type
Basically, most people fall in to one of the following skin types: dry, combination and oily.
2.Think About Your Skin Colour
When you are buying your foundation, test a few products against your skin (and if at all possible, try to view it outside). You want the colour that best fits your own complexion, the one that soaks seamlessly into your skin as if it is invisible. You should not buy a different shade in an effort to boost or change you colour. That is what a bronzer is for.
3.Decide On Your Coverage
Before you buy, you need to think about how much coverage you want to get out of your foundation and how easy it is to build up.
4.Choose Your Foundation
Once you have decided your skin tone, type and how much coverage you want, you are ready to choose your foundation. Should you have aging or dry skin, opt for a blurring or hydrating product. I love Givenchy’s Blurring Foundation Teint Couture Balm (£31, Givenchy). Should you have combination skin, then Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup is just the ticket. For Oily skin types, opt for Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation, £32 (30ml).
5.Apply A Primer
Don’t go to all this trouble and then forget the primer! Your primer will help to reduce the appearance of imperfections and pores, providing you with a good base for your foundation. I love Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, £26, www.smashbox.co.uk
Do you have any tips for finding and applying the perfect foundation?
So, you think you have your list of skin concerns sussed – then out of the blue without any warning, the dreaded ingrown hair suddenly appears. What’s worse, there seems to be no getting rid of it without serious skin removal – it’s as if it has self-set in concrete! Well, if this rings a rather large bell, fear not; here are the best tips and product advice to ensure the unwanted guest is permanently removed from your face (or anywhere else). I love
Clogged hair follicles may cause hairs to grow inwards/sideways (any way but the right way). To Prevent this from happening as well as removing the stubborn already established hair by simply exfoliating in a circular motion and on a regular basis. The best products to use will contain BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) or salicylic acid. Alternatively, a sugar scrub (with as little oil as possible to prevent clogging) can help. I love Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant £26, Look Fantastic.
2.Tease Out With Tweezers
If you can see the hair near to the surface, try to carefully tease this out with a pair of tweezers, but always make sure they are sterilised.
Before hair removal soak a cloth in warm water and gently dampen the area you are about to treat.
4.Never Shave Eyebrow (or Any Other Are on Your Face)
There have been a few suggestions in the media about whether shaving areas on your face is a good idea. I cannot speak for everyone, but generally speaking unless you like stubble and ingrown hairs, avoid this one at all costs.
5.Ingrown Hair Preventative Products
Aside from exfoliating with a sugar scrub or products that contain BHA or salicylic acid, you can also aid in the prevention of these irksome hairs with specific ingrown hair treatments. There are many on the market but the best one I have come across is the Skin Doctors Hair More Hair Inhibitor Spray, (approximately £10 for 120ml). Buy here
Do you have any good tips? Let me know in the comments below and have a lovely week! xx
Today I thought I’d discuss an issue that affects many of us and is one of my daily annoyances – the hooded eye. I’m not sure when my eyelids decided to acquire this unappealing signature look, but I do know I do not want them (but not enough to consider surgery). Fortunately, there are a few things we can do to make them look wider and less hooded.
1.Use An Eye Shadow Primer
As all of us with hooded eyes will know, eyeshadow creases are pretty much a given. Keep them at a minimum by firstly applying your eyeshadow primer. I love Perricone MD’s No EyeShadow, EyeShadow £29, www.perriconemd.co.uk
2.Think About Your Shades
Should you suffer from the dreaded hooded eyes, try to avoid darker eyeshadows. If you love deeper shades, apply them just above the crease and in the centre (making sure you go easy on the shadow, ensuring it doesn’t reach your brow bone).
3.Highlighter Is A Key Product
This quick optical illusion trick will instantly widen the eyes. Take a highlighter stick at apply to the inner corners of your eyelids and also apply a little along your brow bone. Hey presto, big and beautiful peepers! nudebynature’s Touch of Glow Highlight Stick in Champagne (£18) is fab!
4.Forget The Liquid Eyeliner
Liquid eyeliners often cause a hooded eye to look worse. If you simply can’t live without your liner, go for a kohl pencil, which will achieve a softer look, focusing on the outer corners of the eye (liner on the inner corners will make your eyes look like you haven’t slept properly) – and avoid liner on the lower lids as this can make the situation worse. For precise and easy application people with hooded eyelids should apply their liner with open eyes. You will be amazed at how much difference this actually makes! Try Rimmel’s Soft Kohl at Feel Unique (£2.99)
5.Invest In a Good EyeShadow Brush
Eyeshadow lines draw attention to a hooded eye, do buy a really good soft eyeshadow brush, gently sweeping across the eyelid to prevent those irksome lines and create a beautiful wide-eyed finish.
Take that hooded eyes!
