Never Use These Skincare Ingredients Together

Hey Lovelies!

#Never Use These Skincare Ingredients Together

No matter what the skincare issue, there is guaranteed to be a product to assist you. AHAs /BHAs work on cell turnover; hyaluronic acid will plump up your skin, surging it with moisture; vitamin E aids in repairing, and retinol deals with those intrusive fine lines nobody likes. However, it is imperative to remember not to just slap on all of these together and think, “job done.” Mixing certain ingredients can deeply damage the skin, making it worse rather than better.

It is important to devise a signature skincare routine especially for your skin type and concerns. This may take a little time – but not doing it would be as crazy as buying all the ingredients for a 3 course luxury meal, grabbing a pot and throwing the squid in with the chocolate sauce, adding every other ingredient while you’re at it, and then expecting it to taste heavenly! Check out the following concoctions that should always remain a no-go union.

Vitamin A (Retinol) And Vitamin C

The general rule of thumb is to apply retinol at night (as it can increase sun-sensitivity) and keep your vitamin C for the day. Vitamin C is an essential part of anyone’s skincare routine as it offers immense antioxidant value, providing that necessary protection against free radical damage. However, used in unison these can instigate dryness, redness and sensitive skin. An amazing vitamin C serum is SkinCeuticals Serum 10 (£80), www.lookfantastic.com

Retinol And AHA /BHA

When it comes to tackling the dreaded acne, diminishing lines or dealing with pigmentation, retinol would be your hero product. Additionally, AHAs /BHAs make fantastic exfoliators and cell regenerators; thus, should be a part of everyone skincare. But take note: applying these two warriors together is like initiating a fight club on your face. Expect at the very least some irritation and at worst, serious aggression and damaged skin. I love Esthederm’s Intensive Retinol Serum, (£49), www.lookfantastic.com

Vitamin C With AHA/BHAs

This will quite simply, put a car-bosh on your pH balance, causing complete ineffectiveness of what you are applying. As pointless as spending 10 minutes locating Corrie on catch-up, pressing play and then leaving the house. I’m loving Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging 10% AHA Exfoliant, (£34), www.paulaschoice.co.uk

AHAs and BHAs

Basically, acid superseded by more acid – bad idea

Most dermatologists, beauty editors and experts will tell you that AHAs/BHAs, Vitamin C, E, Retinol and Sunscreen are all key ingredients. You can use sunscreen alongside vitamin C and E, no sweat.  But, as for the rest – take the above advice. Your skin will thank you for it.

Have an awesome weekend people xx

The Best Cleaning Hacks For Lazy Girls And Guys

Hey Lovelies!

A little secret – I can’t stand cleaning the house. This is down to part-laziness and part-despair, because let’s face it – cleaning is a never-ending thankless task. For me, it feels like the family have some kind of radar. It’s as if they wait until I have just finished hoovering, scrubbing, mopping and then pounce. Within minutes all making the house look decent, it is very quickly and effectively undone.

If I didn’t find it so soul-destroying and hideous I would be forced to admit the family have mastered the process of destruction to the point where it is an exceptionally talented art form (that in some parallel universe, might be admired). Not this one, though. If this sounds familiar, fear no more. I have discovered some awesome cleaning hacks that will not only clean beyond your wildest dreams but achieve a gleaming maison in a fraction of the time. Thank you, God,

1.The Dreaded Oven Rack

A gif of spongebag
Credit: Giphy.com

This is probably one of the worst jobs for me. Not so any more. According to EHow, all you need is white vinegar, baking soda and a scrubbing pad. So, I tried – and woah, it actually works!

Simply place the racks in the sink, spray them with vinegar, then cover them in baking soda and go and have a cup of tea. On your return to the kitchen for your tea top-up, cover them with hot water and leave for approximately 10 minutes. Finish your tea and biscuits then scrub off the grime (it takes literally no effort) Yay!

2.Pet Urine

Dogs on stairs
Credit: Giphy.com

So cute, i know. However, there’s ALWAYS a downside. There really is nothing worse than a urine-stained carpet, but thankfully there are two really good solutions that mean you don’t have to scrub away for hours on end, only to discover the smell or stain won’t budge.

Once you have blotted away as much liquid as possible with paper towels, either mix 50% white vinegar with 50% water and soak the area, or if this isn’t effective enough, mix some washing-up liquid with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide and soak. The latter one is pretty invincible and will work on practically all carpets, mattresses, etc. Use a scrubbing pad to work into the stain, then cover the area with baking soda, rub with your scrubbing pad then hoover up. Hey presto!

3.The Mattress

A gif of throwing out a mattress
Credit: Giphy.com

I know, right?!? You even have to clean your mattress. Is nothing sacred? Apparently, this is quite important for those with allergies and asthma, and although the above gif looks like the perfect answer, I don’t fancy the effort this would probably take. So I am now taking note.

According to various online sources you simply need some baking soda, essential oil (optional) and a hoover. What could be easier? Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to a tub of baking soda and sprinkle all over your mattress. Rub in the solution and then leave it alone for an hour (the perfect amount of time to watch your favourite programme). When an hour or so has passed, nip upstairs and hoover the mattress, then turn and look in slack-jawed amazement at your cleaning expertise.

Have you tried any of these cleaning hacks and what are your thoughts? Leave me a message in the comments below, and have a fantastic weekend people xx

6 Ways To Tackle Blue Monday

Hey lovelies!

We’ve all heard of Blue Monday – the day that falls on the third Monday of each January, every year. It is supposed to be (according to experts) the time when we are most likely to feel depressed/miserable/sad. This is probably due to the fact that we’ve spent a sh#t load at Christmas; we haven’t been paid; we have made resolutions that are beginning to take their toll; the weather is, at best, bleak and life generally sucks. Don’t fear my friends – here are 6 ways we can tackle that Blue Monday feeling and get back ahead of the game. Read on:

1.Breathe

When it all gets a bit too much to bear and we are feeling miserable or anxious, there is something that we can all do at any moment to help ourselves. Simply close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Take in long, slow and deep breaths and repeat 10 times – everything will feel that bit calmer and become easier to deal with. #breathingworks

2.Laugh

Minions laughing
Credit: Giphy

OK, I’m not suggesting some Patch Adams theory of laughter overcoming all obstacles or illnesses, but there really is something to be said for this technique. When we are faced with adversity or stress, we all have a choice either to laugh or let sadness take over. Sadness and stress doesn’t solve anything – it just makes things that much worse. Choose laughter – even when you don’t want to, especially when you don’t want to. It will train your brain to gain a better perspective, and gradually life will become a bit more peaceful.

3.Talk

Feed me seymore gif
Credit: Giphy

Yes people, life is crap. But we are not alone in this. When life gives you a twist of lemon, talk to a friend, a colleague, a therapist, anyone. You will be surprised that even if you have someone there to listen and not necessarily advise, this will help relieve those Blue Monday symptoms.

4.Dance

The Simpsons
Credit: Giphy

I’m a great believer in dancing away your problems. You don’t even need to leave the house. Put your favourite upbeat songs on and just dance and sing for a while. If that is not your thing, do whatever is – maybe going for a run, bike ride or some meditation – it doesn’t matter – just do something to get rid of the negativity.

5.Plan

So, unless you are really fortunate, many of you (like me) will be broke right now. That said, this Blue Monday make plans for something you really want to do this year: the festival you don’t want to miss or a comedy club, or even a getaway somewhere. There’s no need to book it yet, just do some research and write down the steps you need to take to make it happen – realistic goals people, that your brain actually knows it can achieve. Then stick the plan of action on your fridge.

6.Avoid Depressants

Easier said than done, I know. But there is nothing that makes life that much crapper than when you are feeling blue and have a drink. In the same respect, take it easy on caffeine and sugar, or anything that will give you a short high followed by a massive crash. It’s never worth it.

Do you have any thoughts on Blue Monday? Leave me a message in the comments below – and have a good day people xx

5 Tips For Flawless Foundation

Getting your foundation right can feel like a daunting task. To start with, there’s so many products out there and then it’s a seemingly never-ending mission to find the perfect one for your particular skin tone and type. During my years as beauty editor I have discovered some top tips that make this task as easy as putting on your shoes.

1.Define Your Skin Type

Basically, most people fall in to one of the following skin types: dry, combination and oily.

2.Think About Your Skin Colour

a gif of hedrick saying boom
Giphy

When you are buying your foundation, test a few products against your skin (and if at all possible, try to view it outside). You want the colour that best fits your own complexion, the one that soaks seamlessly into your skin as if it is invisible. You should not buy a different shade in an effort to boost or change you colour. That is what a bronzer is for.

3.Decide On Your Coverage

Giphy

Before you buy, you need to think about how much coverage you want to get out of your foundation and how easy it is to build up.

4.Choose Your Foundation

Credit: givenchybeauty.com

Once you have decided your skin tone, type and how much coverage you want, you are ready to choose your foundation. Should you have aging or dry skin, opt for a blurring or hydrating product. I love Givenchy’s Blurring Foundation Teint Couture Balm (£31, Givenchy). Should you have combination skin, then Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup is just the ticket. For Oily skin types, opt for Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation, £32 (30ml).

5.Apply A Primer

Credit: smashbox.co.uk

Don’t go to all this trouble and then forget the primer! Your primer will help to reduce the appearance of imperfections and pores, providing you with a good base for your foundation. I love Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, £26, www.smashbox.co.uk

No, Ingrown Hair, You May Not Have A Place On The Face

So, you think you have your list of skin concerns sussed – then out of the blue without any warning, the dreaded ingrown hair suddenly appears. What’s worse, there seems to be no getting rid of it without serious skin removal – it’s as if it has self-set in concrete! Well, if this rings a rather large bell, fear not; here are the best tips and product advice to ensure the unwanted guest is permanently removed from your face (or anywhere else). I love

1.Exfoliate

Screen Shot 2018-11-12 at 12.56.16

Look Fantastic

Clogged hair follicles may cause hairs to grow inwards/sideways (any way but the right way). To Prevent this from happening as well as removing the stubborn already established hair by simply exfoliating in a circular motion and on a regular basis. The best products to use will contain BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) or salicylic acid. Alternatively, a sugar scrub (with as little oil as possible to prevent clogging) can help. I love Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant £26, Look Fantastic.

2.Tease Out With Tweezers

Screen Shot 2018-11-12 at 13.01.32.png

Wikipedia

If you can see the hair near to the surface, try to carefully tease this out with a pair of tweezers, but always make sure they are sterilised.

3.Warm Water

Screen Shot 2018-11-12 at 13.04.25

Before hair removal soak a cloth in warm water and gently dampen the area you are about to treat.

4.Never Shave Eyebrow (or Any Other Are on Your Face)

There have been a few suggestions in the media about whether shaving areas on your face is a good idea. I cannot speak for everyone, but generally speaking unless you like stubble and ingrown hairs, avoid this one at all costs.

5.Ingrown Hair Preventative Products

Screen Shot 2018-11-12 at 13.10.41

Look Fantastic

Aside from exfoliating with a sugar scrub or products that contain BHA or salicylic acid, you can also aid in the prevention of these irksome hairs with specific ingrown hair treatments. There are many on the market but the best one I have come across is the Skin Doctors Hair More Hair Inhibitor Spray, (approximately £10 for 120ml). Buy here

Tips To Ensure Your Make-Up Stays Smudge-Proof

Hey Lovelies!

There’s a lot of brands that promise to keep your make-up smudge-proof. Sure, there are some great smudge-resistant products and some, that are, more WTF. That flawless complexion on which you spent enough time, should definitely not dissolve into non-existence by lunch. This is simply not an option. Fortunately, there are a few good tips to keep your make-up smudge-proof and ensure you look gorgeous all-day long. Read on:

1.Exfoliate, People!

giphy1

Credit: Giphy

I say this so much, but that’s because it is sooo important – exfoliation is key (but not too much). Try to exfoliate twice each week to keep the dead skin cells at bay and ensure your skin is a perfectly smooth canvas, thus giving your make-up the optimal chance of doing its job.

2.Keep Moisturisers and Serums To A Minimum And Give It Time

giphy2

Credit: Giphy

Moisturisers, serums and SPFs are essential, but it is important not to overdo it. Too much and your make-up will slide off quicker than ice cream on the surface of the sun (well, maybe not that quickly, but you get my point). The other point to remember, is once you’ve applied your moisturiser, serum and SPF, give it time to settle into your skin before you apply the primer.

3.Primer

Invest in a great primer for your skin type. I love Nude by Nature Perfecting Primer, £22. A good primer can and will make all the difference. Buy here

4.Layer

Credit: iconiclondon.com

After applying your primer, add your foundation and concealer, then apply your contour and highlighter. I am a big fan of Iconic London’s Multi-Use Pro-Contour Palette, (£32.99). Once you have applied these, add a brush of blush and then a final brush of contour/highlighter for added staying power. Those with dry skin should stick to cream contours and foundations.

5.Give Eyes A Chance

Use an eye primer to keep your eyeshadow from smudging away,  I find Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion, £11.20 really keeps shadow crease-free for longer.

Liquid eyeliners are fab for the upper lids, but for the lower lash line opt for a pencil liner.

6.Set it

giphy3

Credit: Giphy

Always finish by adding a touch of mattifying powder to keep your make-up in place.   Et voila, you’re good to go, without the need for your compact or makeup essentials. (We all know we will probably take them, just to be on the safe side – old habits.)

6 Tips for Getting The Most Out Of Your Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo has long since been considered a beauty life saver. Following a heavy clubbing session and having minimal time before the working day begins, a holiday break at the campsite with your fella (and you discover the bathroom isn’t fit for rats), or you are just having a what-the-hell-I-don’t-care week. Whatever the reason, dry shampoo is on hand to save the day and your dignity.

Results, however, are not always as we’d like them. Check out these few tips to get the most out of your dry shampoo.

1.Choose The Right Dry Shampoo For Your Hair

giphy

Giphy

Some key points to remember when buying your dry shampoo:

Blondes: Powdery dry shampoos can cover darker roots.

Darker Hair Types: Choose invisible or light-tinted dry shampoos to prohibit a chalky effect showing up.

2.Prevention Not Cure

Kill the grease before it happens by applying your dry shampoo post-wash. Doing this will prohibit the build-up of grease for longer.

Technique

giphy1

Credit: Giphy/Nancy lee Grahn Girl Gif

Remember to apply your shampoo evenly, spraying from the same distance as you would use your hairdryer (approximately 8-10 inches from your head), from the parting and downwards. Massage into the scalp and ensure all of the product is absorbed.

4.Use The Right Brush

Try using a slim brush with tourmaline bristles to aid in effective blending.

5.Blend and Build

giphy2

Credit: Giphy/Comedy

Blending in is key to getting optimal results – and NEVER use too much product. Your hair will enjoy added volume from the dry shampoo, so once used keep it down rather than tying it up and risking a grease reveal!

6.When The Grease Has Already Got You…

giphy3

Credit: Giphy

Should you wake up late and discover the dreaded grease has already attacked, grab your dry shampoo and spray your T-section (the top parting and along the hairline) and spraying 8-10 inches from your hair. This area is the greasiest so this is where you need to focus.

Make these few changes and your dry shampoo will be your star product! #lifegoals

Have you got a fave dry shampoo? Please let me know your thoughts.

In the meantime, have a happy Friday guys xx

The Top Tricks To Make Your Eyes Pop

Hey Lovelies,

Big and bright eyes are key to providing a fresher and younger looking complexion. Sadly, life gets in the way and often our eyes are left looking as though we’ve sat through the top ten saddest films ever (i.e. P.s I love You), been in a fight and come off worst, or fallen to sleep on the new necklace you got for Christmas and awoke to discover its left a massive indent over your already horridly ingrained eyebags. Ok, the latter one actually happened. Anyway, should you suffer from the same affliction of tiny worn-out eyes, check out these tips for fast transformation and prepare to be amazed!

1.Curl Lashes

giphy6

Giphy

Do not skimp on the timeframe for this task. Spending a decent amount of time (5-6 minutes) making sure your lashes are perfectly curled is the perfect preparation for a gorgeously eye-popping finish.

2.Mascara

giphy7

Giphy

We often like to apply mascara last, but if you do it as a priority you can clean up any mistakes without enduring the hassle of reapplying the shadow etc. Sweep through the upper eyelashes in a zigzag motion to get a more even and fuller effect. Do not forget your lower lash line and if you have any clumps, simply sweep them away with a mascara wand.

Should your eyelashes be particularly sparse, consider applying a few individual lashes to the middle and outer lids (upper lash line).

3.Eyebrow Highlighter

benefit-high-brow-eyebrow-highlighter-2.8g_1

Credit: escentual.com

Using a pencil eyebrow highlighter, blend a little product immediately under your brow line. This creates an immediate lifting effect and will help the eyes to look instantly bigger. I love Benefit’s High Brow Pencil.

4.Eyeshadow

mac_sku_MRGM01_640x600_0

Credit: maccosmetics.co.uk

Next apply a neutral shade, an inoffensive bronze or light to medium brown to the upper lid, stretching right up to almost reach your brow. An ever so slightly darker shade will have a bigger impact on your eyes, making the whites stand out, whilst bolder colours can have a detrimental effect.

Now, add a lighter shade of your chosen colour to underneath your lower lashes; this further enhances the whites of your eyes and offers the illusion of bigger peepers, too.

5.Highlighter (Again)

Using your finger and in a downward motion, apply a touch of cream highlighter to only the middle area of your lid. The light reflecting particles will cause the eye to appear bigger.

6.Avoid Eyeliner

Sure, there are tricks to applying eyeliner that will enhance your eyes – but if you’ve had a bad night the best thing to do would be totally avoid the liner.

7.Eyebrows

giphy10

Giphy

Using a soft (and colour-appropriate) eyebrow pencil, gently fill in any sparse areas on each eyebrow. Creating well-defined brows with subtle arches truly transforms your look, whilst enhancing the look of your peepers. This is such an easy step that is often overlooked. If you get your eyebrows right everything else instantly looks more groomed and that much better! Remember this face-saving and time saving tip the morning after a wild night out!

Hope you enjoyed my eye-enhancing tips. Do you have any products or tips? Let me know your thoughts.

Have a fab Friday! xx

New Year Resolutions: Make 2018 Your Best Year Yet

Hey lovelies,

Happy New Year to you all.

I am terrible at keeping New Year’s resolutions – to the point where I almost decided not to make any this year. Then I thought on – what is stopping so many of us from sticking to our heartfelt and well-intended plans? Why shouldn’t 2018 be THE year for everything we desire to actually become a reality?

Should any of you be contemplating your New Year resolutions, before you pledge your area of self-improvement, I have compiled a checklist that may just help us to breeze our resolutions until they are totally IRL.

1.Be Realistic

giphy

Giphy

For instance, if we were to make a pledge similar to that of K Kardashian’s (less phone time and being more in the moment) probably we all would succeed with flying colours. I am a great believer in everyone having the ability to achieve anything to which they set their mind. However, if your dreams are sky-high with several mountains blocking the way, make a plan with realistic goals to be achieved within feasible time frames. Some of the best things take time, and this is ok.

 2.Make Notes

giphy1

Giphy

Write out your goals or dreams, stick them on the fridge, by your bed, on the mirror – everywhere. Read them each day when you get up and before you go to sleep. Pledge to do one thing each day (or even each week) that brings your dream closer. Visualizing your dreams and repeating this pattern will condition your brain into action.

3.Fitness

giphy2

Giphy

If your goal is to lose weight or become healthier, consider the whole situation from your diet plan, methods of cooking, to exercise. Choose an exercise you do not find mundane – if you love music take your headphones. Rather than planning on running miles each day, plan instead, on walking briskly for 20 minutes each day – this is actually better for you, is more effective and will be an easier task to accomplish.

4.Don’t Give Up.

giphy3

Giphy

Whatever your dreams, goals or plans, remember you can achieve them. If you really want something, never give up. Having a down day is inevitable – but when it’s done, get up shake it off and remember why you want the goal. Write the reasons down – this will help reinstate its value and spur you on when you need it most.

5.Saving Money

giphy4

Giphy

If money is an issue – give your friend or family a jar to look after that you cannot touch. Pledge to put a little – even if it’s just £5 each week. You will be amazed at how quickly it can mount up. Before you know it you will be jetting off on that American dream getaway. Yay!!!
